Friday, August 2: Rest day in Ross-on-Wye

By this day, I had ridden four days straight and had gone over 150 miles. Also, the ride through the Forest of Dean was tough and I was tired. In addition, Ross-on-Wye was a pretty town that I could spend a day relaxing in. As a result, I decided on Friday morning that Friday was a rest day.

I ate the fruit that I had purchased at the local Safeway for breakfast (the meal at the B&B was extra and I went for an entire casaba melon, instead). I was up and out before the town got started for the day. Ross is an old market town that had lots of old buildings and a church with a tall cathederal.

Ross is also known for this sculpture of three fish. I also liked the look of the typical English pub in the background.

I walked to the riverside park and took this picture of the river and its banks.

While on the walking path along the river, I looked up and saw this view showing the different roofs in Ross, all the way up to the church steeple.

Then, I walked up to the church and managed to get the church, steeple, and grounds into a single picture.

This row house was originally built as an alms house as a place for the poor.

This marketplace is the oldest building in Ross and still the site of town markets. It was build in sandstone in the 1670s.

Once I decided to rest, I bought a newspaper, sat and talked with a 96-year old Ross resident, accessed the internet at the local library, read my book, and ate a nice, healthy lunch. In the afternoon and evening, I watched the Commonwealth Games (being held in Manchester).
