Riding Through American History from Richmond, VA to Valley Forge, PA
I had a meeting to attend near Philadelphia and I decided to make a bicycle tour out of it. Since the ride occurred in October, I didn't want the ride to take too long, as the days are short and the weather unreliable.
I looked for places to start a shorter tour that I could easily fly into from home. I considered Boston, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, but decided on Richmond, VA, as both it and Philadelphia are on the ACA's Atlantic Coast route.
The entire route is on Map 3 of the Atlantic Coast Route, which starts in Richmond, VA and ends north of Philly. The route goes through Washington DC and all the urban sprawl associated with it, including Baltimore. Instead of going there, I turned off the ACA route near Quantico Marine Corps Reservation and went northwest to Harper's Ferry.
After a day off to see the historic sites, I rode back east, re-connecting to the ACA route at Columbia, PA just over the Susquehanna River.
After riding through Amish country and the pretty Pennsylvania fall, I ended my trip at Valley Forge, PA.
You can see the planning I did for this tour and see the actual route I rode via the TrackMyTour app.
